Former Encino Cosmetic Surgeon Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter

In the Van Nuys Superior Court, a former Encino cosmetic surgeon, Ehab Mohamed, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. The criminal charges are related to the death of his patient in 2010. He is accused of giving the patient a toxic cocktail of drugs during a liposuction surgery.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said he will be arraigned in the Van Nuys court in for the death of Sharon Carpenter. He is also facing charges of elder abuse related to another patient.

The victim, who was 61 years old, passed away in his office after a liposuction surgery that lasted over 10 hours. The patient was given a large and lethal dose of lidocaine, Fentanyl and oxycodone during the surgery.

Attorneys for the Medical Board of California said that his medical assistant called a local hospital and requested intravenous fluids and tubing because the doctor believed she was dehydrated. However, he continued with the surgery after the hospital would not sell him the requested medical supplies.

After 10 hours of surgery, the patient was recorded as having shallow and intermittent breathing. About 10 minutes later, she had no pulse.

The elder abuse charge involved another lengthy liposuction surgery on a 77-year-old woman. She had ongoing health complications due to the surgery.

Prosecutors are claiming that the medical equipment in the doctor’s office failed to meet state-mandated safety standards.

The defendant has been in jail since July, 2013 for a non-related conviction for forgery and burglary. If he is convicted of involuntary manslaughter and elder abuse, his is facing up to 10 years in a California state prison.

In another case in March, 2012, he was convicted and sentenced to to almost one year in the county jail for attempted grand theft related to a liposuction system.
