Gallup Poll Shows Public Support for Marijuana Legalization Growing

Public opinion appears to be turning in favor of the legalization of marijuana. According to a new Gallup poll, a record number of Americans favor the legalization. The poll concluded that 58 percent support and only 39 percent oppose.

One year ago, the same poll concluded that 48 percent favored marijuana legalization, while 50 percent opposed. Ten years ago, the poll showed that just 31 percent favored legalization of marijuana, while 64 percent opposed it.

The marijuana legalization issue still remains a partisan one. About 65 percent of Democrats support legalizing, while only 35 percent of Republicans support it. About 62 percent of independents say they support marijuana legalization.

The only age group who did not support legalization was 65 and older. The poll also concluded that the age group between 18 and 29 are the most likely to support legalizing marijuana. In this age group, 67 percent support, while only 31 percent oppose.

The results from this latest poll are a major victory for people who are in support of the legalization of marijuana. In 2012, Colorado and Washington were the first states to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. The United States Justice Department said they would not challenge the laws in these states.

Whether you support or oppose the legalization of marijuana, it still remains a criminal offense in the state of California. If you are facing any type of marijuana offense in Los Angeles, whether it is possession, distribution or another drug-related offense, it is important to consult with an experienced criminal defense lawyer to protect your future.
