Former LA Sheriff's Sergeant Arrested for Grand Theft and Embezzlement

A former Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant, Bonnie Bryant, is a 28-year veteran of the department and a was a narcotics task force supervisor. He has been arrested and accused of stealing cash during a sting operation. He has plead not guilty to charges of grand theft and embezzlement.

He has been charged with one felony count of grand theft of personal property and another felony count of embezzlement by a public officer. He is also been charged with a misdemeanor crime of petty theft and a special criminal allegation that he carrying a gun during the commission of a crime.

He has been accused of stealing $4,000 during an narcotics sting operation that was staged by the Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau in the summer of 2012. A guard who was monitoring activity over a security camera said he observed him putting money in a bag in the trunk of his car in a parking lot.

He resigned from the Sheriff's Department late last year. Prosecutors say that he is facing over 4 years in a California state prison if convicted.

He was released from jail after posting a bail of $70,000. He is scheduled to be back in court later this month for his preliminary hearing where it will be decided if there is enough evidence for him to stand trial.
